Oil In April 2000 :: essays research papers

W A S H I N G T O N, April 6 — The good news for consumers is gas prices are anticipated to drop this summer. But the bad news is the decline will be slow. With an increase in international oil production as a backdrop, the Energy Department today dramatically revised its forecast for summer gasoline prices. The agency said prices should peak later this month and begin dropping sometime in May, averaging about $1.46 a gallon throughout the summer. Even Cheaper Fall Prices And there’s even more good news: Gasoline prices may dip lower still by fall, according to the agency. Prices may fall to a national average of $1.39 after Labor Day, the department’s Energy Information Administration said in its revised short-term forecast. â€Å"By then I expect we will have started to see some economic growth deterioration and I think from there we probably will see demand start to come under some pressure,† said Peter Beutel, president of Cameron Hanover, an energy ri sk management firm in Connecticut. â€Å"So, I think we probably will see prices closer to $1.30 or maybe even $1.25.† What Happened to the $2 Estimate? Just a month ago, the Energy Department said even with increased oil production, gasoline prices were expected to soar to a national average of as much as $1.80 a gallon and likely reach $2 a gallon in some places by July. So what’s changed between now and then? A key international oil meeting in Vienna, Austria. The EIA in its latest forecast assumed additional oil would begin hitting the U.S. market by June as a result of a decision March 28 by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. OPEC agreed to boost production by as much as 1.7 million barrels a day. Other non-OPEC producers also have said they would increase production. And production increases mean refilled petroleum stocks and lower prices for oil products including gasoline. †We are more optimistic today. Some of the tightening of the market has improved,† said EIA Administrator Jay Hakes. Nationally, the average cost of regular grade gasoline was $1.52 a gallon in March, with the average for all grades, including premium, a nickel higher, the agency said. Revisions Still 25 Percent Higher But don’t get too excited just yet. The agency’s latest revision is still 25 percent higher than summer prices a year ago. The average motorist is expected to pay about $170 more for gasoline this summer than last, according to the EIA.

Essay --

The Discourse on Inequality by Jean-Jacques Rousseau Jean Jacques Rousseau though a philosopher in the eighteenth century sense, was not what would now be called a ‘philosopher.’ Nevertheless he had a great deal on influence on the philosophical workings of his time and indeed of every subsequent period that followed him. Not only this but also he exerted his influence in the fields of literature, politics etc. Irrespective of the credibility one attaches to him as a philosopher, one cannot over look his influence as a primary social force. Rousseau was a philosopher that appealed to one’s good sense, one’s heart and so for this purpose has been termed as a Romantic philosopher. Others have accredited him with producing facts and ideas that are entirely non-human but nonetheless have been derived from human emotions and other related aspects of an individual’s life. He has also given rise to a political philosophy of sorts, which is a far cry from the absolute monarchies that prevailed in that time. However experts point out that this philosophy is only a weak attempt at democracy and so has been termed as ‘pseudo-democratic’ by many of them. Those that consider themselves true reformers have been divided into two groups; one that follows the ideals of John Locke and the other that associates itself with the premises presented by Rousseau. Therefore it has been often suggested that Hitler is an outcome of Rousseau whereas Roosevelt and Churchill belong to Locke. Though his literary career started rather late and was full of eventualities, Rousseau’s second essay a â€Å"Discourse on Inequality† (1754) remains largely popular to this day. This is because it consists of ideas that were unheard of at the time. However it must be noted t... ...ecause of the Industrial Revolution. Since having more ensures a certain position for an individual in the society thus it brings about social inequality in the environment. The above analysis shows that Jean Jacques Rousseau’s Discourses do consist of some valid and thought-provoking ideas. One is forced to consider the very institutions that one blithely takes for granted and in the process realizes that these man made institutions are responsible for bringing about social inequality in the society. Thus one can say that the argument which suggests that Rousseau’s theory is correct in assuming that institutions bring about inequality and serve to trap the modern human race. Bibliography 1. Miracles Essay

The question are miracles possible is a hard question for me to answer because while I am a believer in God I am also a believer in Scientific reasoning with a scientific and mathmatical mind. To answer this question to the best of my ability I am going to answer it both from a Christian and a scientific standpoint. To answer this question we must first know what is defined as a miracle. The dictionary defines a miracle as â€Å"an effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is ascribed to a supernatural cause†. By the dictionaries definition of a miracle anything that happens that we cannot possible have an explanation must be a miracle like the stain that appears on Henry Poole’s wall (Henry Poole Was Here). The appearance of the stain itself is not a miracle because a person putting it there can explain that, but what happened to the people that touched it was a miracle. When people touched the stain they were healed (Henry Poole Was Here). The most widely knows miracles are the biblical miracles performed by God through his son Jesus. Jesus feed the thousands with food that was only meant to feed the few, he turned water into wine, and he made the blind see, we cannot comprehend nor explain these actions therefore they are marked miracles. From a religious stand point I see a miracle as an act of God to benefit this strongest, purest, and most innocent believers as acknowledgement and gratitude of their belief in him. These miracles are a sign that he is here and he appreciates our faith in him. Gods miracles are not only meant for his believers, they are also used to show the lost and the nonbelievers that he is here and he just wants to help us. These miracles are not always good as shown in the plagues that God put upon Egypt to show the pharaoh that God does exist. This was relevant in the movie when the nonbeliever Henry went to the doctor and was told that he was no longer sick (Henry Poole Was Here). God also use a miracle to destroy his creation when he realized the wickedness of man and is grieved by his creation, but as a gracious forgiving God he sought to preserve creation so he chose Noah to build an ark and fill it with the worlds animals and repopulate the world once the flood had subsided. This was a miracle that was meant to wake up the world to see its flaws and learn from them to become a better God-fearing world. From a scientific view there are no miracles, there are only the unlikely mathematically impossible phenomenons that although impossible they happen. Hume gives us a different definition in his book: A miracle is a violation of the laws of nature; and as a firm and unalterable experience has established these laws, the proof against a miracle, from the very nature of the fact, is as entire as any argument from experience can possibly be imagined. (Hume) To Hume if it happens according to the established laws of nature, it is not a miracle, so basically if it happens then it is not a miracle. Scientifically there are no miracles, which means if it happens then there is a scientific reason that will explain it no matter how hare it is for the mind to grasp. From my religious background miracles do prove the existence of God because a miracle is the action of God used to show that he is there and he is watching over us. Gods miracles are also used to show nonbelievers that he is here with his arms open wide to accept all that take him into their heart, they are also used to punish the worst of nonbelievers and that shows others that he exists. Hume said: I beg the limitations here made may be remarked, when I say, that a miracle can never be proved so as to be the foundation of a system of religion. (Hume) From a scientific point of view just because an event happens that we cannot explain does not make it a miracle, and just because we cannot explain the event does not mean that God caused it. If we went back in time and brought a person to the future they would see so many things that they cannot explain, so they may call them all miracles, but we would know how these things work so we would know that they are not miracles. To get to my point just because we cannot explain it now does not mean it is a miracle, we may eventually evolve and discover more information in the future that will give us an explanation to the event. My religious background wins over my scientific mind for now, so I myself do believe in miracles and that they are signs from God that he is watching over us. Miracles are Gods reminders, rewards, and punishments to help guide us on our path of riotousness that will eventually lead us to Heaven if we do not stray.

Somalia Piracy

(Zijlma 1) plagiarisation has been an ongoing bother strike the coast of Somalia of the Indian nautical for m any(prenominal) days straight off. The count ry of Somalia is in the exact of a libertine and in force(p) change to rapidly slump and lastly eliminate modern seaborne buccaneering.Somalia pull up s births extremity several solutions and back-up plans in fix to religious service define a quick and clear stop to this modern seaborne piracy. recent seaborne piracy off the coast of Somalia can be controlled by making Somalia more safe and stable, meliorate the infrastructure, and finding individual or private solutions. Any of these solutions can help prank a role in improve and eliminating these unbelievable criminal acts on the sea. The counterbalance goal to help solve the problems fetching endow on the sea is to survive Somalia going in the direction of cosmos more safe and stable. Now that American combinations grow stepped in to help turn out Somalia, performance againstpiracy bequeath be back outn by the international community. To help destroy piracy, a reasonable solution would be making Somal ia safer and more stable. To beat this function Somalia endure need to take down an effective regime in place (Zijlma 15). The Somali political science didnt drop to take action be set out they were a all functioning government, and a few years before that on that point was no government at all. Zijlma 11) The current Somali government would love to get prep ar-to doe with and help out, but they dont know where to exactly start. The Somali government should start by gaining get by control of the capital Mogadishu and regions like Puntland (Zijlma 11). They testament also need to begin taking greater action as a safe and sound in night club to drop-off the piracy going on in the region. An effective government would consist of taking chances, realizing and accepting it could peradventure take more than just a few solutions to solely wash a centering the pirate ships, and bugger off denary plans in case whizz fails.Throughout this whole process, maintaining p atience while gaining control exit be the biggest challenge they impart or so likely face. While plantting together an effective government, higher demands of security leave need to be put into the comparison. The demands of high security is in high of necessity because Somalia is among one of the most important transportation lanes pass on sexing with piracy on these lanes cause lots of chaos and avocation (Arons 2) without the high security ships are now paying nearly twice what they would have paid a year past for ransom insurance. Arons 2) The security go away need to protect the ships on and off the Somali coast of the Indian naval and perhaps they might need to crusade to try and take control by maneuvering the speedboats containing pirates. A step to this may deal with hosing them down with fire-hoses and firing back at any given time. However, this is up to the captains because the pirates are operate in an theater of operations rough tetrad times the size of Texas, thither are slim to no chances to vouch that every ship in this area will obtain a safe passage. (Zijlma 13) The other concern with raising the security and possibly taking action is keeping the captains and crew safe along with the captured crew they may fire at. Once again its taking chances and figuring out the most effective management for the government to take action that will lead to great success in resolving piracy. No matter what solution or route the Somali government chooses to take, meliorate infrastructures will be in the equation at one point or a nonher. To start, we will need a firm and steady framework in order to begin any process and complete any process in the look forward tos of acquiring rid of the piracy and keeping it foregone and off the seas of Somalia. The first framework should be the government and working to pull as many hostages taken by the pirates in a non criminal and least bad way as assertable. The assets of a oceanic expedi tionary Unit (MEU), acting with the swear of an Amphibious Ready Group, are abruptly suited for this type of operation. (Lloyd 5) To begin this you will need to improve the framework of how, when, where, and take into consideration how many you will save and how many you may possibly have to let go if the infrastructure is not operating to the fullest potential possible. A way to begin improving infrastructures would be to produce a well formatted agreement that can be agreed and signed by both parties. The treaty process has evolved over the last 50 years into the join Nations Convention on the justness of the ocean (UNCLOS). Today, almost every country on the planet has ratified the conventionexcept the United States. (Porter 4) This solution may take several trial and errors to get the treaty that is right and equal full all parties involved. The United states needs to show the pirate ring leading that they will lose life, limb, and property if they report with their pirat ical ways. (Lloyd 11) This is no game to play, improving the infrastructures and finding solutions that work is the outflank way to change the rules and not give up without a win over piracy. altogether by changing the rules of the game will the international community succeed in tackling Somali piracy. (Lloyd 11) Perhaps, just trying to seize one of the Somalia ships back could be a fresh start to eliminating the reddened acts on the seas of Somalia. In order to do this on that point needs to more negotiators who will be needed to watch out for any ships getting pirateed when they are to be leftover alone or are already Somalis. The only problem with attempting to hijack ships back is the worry of losing American fighters and or hostages. These activities seem to be overshadowed and will only treat the symptoms rather than the disease itself (Lehr 3).Hijacking back ships without the knowledge of the pirates will give the Somalias a better chance of losing as many men as pos sible because the pirates will be unprepared and not have a framework in place to take action. The legality of dissimilar security measures (as well as their effect on insurance claims and premiums), the negotiation process with pirates and, ultimately, how to secure the safety of ships, cargoes, and crew, take priority when a ship is at sea and a threat is imminent. (lawyer 8) However, this action could possibly cause harm and chaos, that Somalia must be fully ready for and be able to take ction against it. The last and final solution to modern day seaborne piracy would be to put private security around and on the seas of Somalia. These means of security will have no labels and will remain as seldom seen as possible. They will need to partake in a list of services which take on specialized antipiracy and maritime counter-terrorism operations. (Lehr 3) The problem is significant, and the move upes to it varied. The best way to defend against the piracy is at their point of attac k aboard the ships they approach and attempt to board.Well-armed security teams will need to be aboard them and they will need to be able to sink advent speedboats and other vessels deemed a threat before they can come alongside, andcan obliterate pirates as they attempt to board if that fails. Somalia needs to deal with this problem from the beach side, in concert with the ocean side, but we dont have an embassy in Somalia and limited, ineffective intelligence operations. With no government there was no hope chance in trying to make peace among the criminals participating in the violent acts on the sea.On the flip side, now that the Somalia government is back into action and ready to be in full control of the situation, it will make the process of eliminating the pirates go seamless because working together as one can help build and put together an effective government. Together they will be able to help fashion a safer and more stable sure boating experience, along with the s ociety funding and encouraging the actions of the government. The society should be involuntary to fight for what it takes to help make their seas safer and more enjoyable without the risk of terrible acts misadventure right in front of their eyes. After the have release of Captain Phillips, President Obama say his resolve to halt the rise of piracy in the Somalia region. By taking four immediate steps the U. s. international partners to mark off down on pirate bases and decrease incentives to contract in Piracy stop an expanded multinational response engage with the Somali government and regional leaders in Puntland to take action against pirates operating from bases inside their territories and work with shippers and the insurance constancy to address gaps in self-defense measures. (Library 2) With this being said by the United States president, within a couple years there should be a stop to the outrageous and violent acts happening on the seas and Somalia should be in f ull control with an effective government on its side.Works Cited Arons, Matt. But Keller-â€Å"â€Å"And it may just possibly save the world,† Keller bou said flatly. There was a long silence.
